Eleven Days to Departure and the Status Has Not Moved

Your seat out of Lahore is confirmed for the first week of September. Your suitcase is half packed in the living room. Your father has already told half the extended family which university you are going to. And your application still says the same two words it said last Tuesday: in progress.

If your visa is still processing and your flight is already booked, stop before you do anything else. This is one of the most common situations we see in the last three weeks before a September intake, and in the overwhelming majority of cases it resolves without anyone losing a seat or a semester. What turns a delay into a genuine crisis is almost never the delay itself. It is the decisions students make in the panic window that follows.

Here is exactly what to do, in order, and what not to touch yet.

Why a Pending Decision This Close to Term Is Usually Normal

Published processing times are service standards, not promises, and they move constantly. As of late August 2026, here is roughly where the three most popular destinations for Pakistani students sit:

• United Kingdom: UKVI's standard service for student visa applications made outside the UK is a decision within three weeks. A priority service is available at extra cost through the visa application centre and turns that into roughly five working days. Check the current fee and availability on GOV.UK's visa decision waiting times page before you pay for anything.
• Canada: IRCC publishes a country specific estimate that it updates weekly. The published figure for Pakistan sat at roughly seven weeks in late July 2026, and it has moved several times this year in both directions. Treat the number on IRCC's own tool as the only figure worth quoting.
• Australia: the Department of Home Affairs does not commit to a fixed timeframe for the subclass 500. It publishes rolling percentile estimates instead — for higher education applications the benchmark has been around half decided within about a month, with the slowest decile stretching to several months.

Read those numbers again and notice something: for a September intake, an application lodged in July or early August is still comfortably inside the normal band. You are not late. You are waiting.

The one figure worth knowing cold is the UK Student Route application fee, which is £558 as of 8 April 2026, roughly PKR 212,000 at August 2026 rates. If anyone quotes you the old £524, they are working from stale information, which tells you something about the rest of their advice.

How to Check Your Status the Right Way

There are exactly two places your status legitimately lives, and neither of them is a Facebook group.

1. The visa application centre where you gave biometrics. For most Pakistani applicants this is a VFS Global or Gerry's centre in Lahore, Karachi, or Islamabad, and it is the actual contact point — not the British High Commission or the Canadian visa office directly. Use the reference number on your receipt in that centre's own tracking tool.
2. The government's own account or tracker. IRCC's secure account for Canada, your UKVI account for the UK, ImmiAccount for Australia. If a website is asking you to pay to see your status, it is not one of these.

Check once a day. Twice, if it genuinely helps you sleep. Checking eleven times a day changes nothing except your blood pressure, and it makes you a softer target for the scam we will get to in a moment.

Talk to Your University Before You Talk to the Airline

This is the step most students get backwards, and it is the single most useful thing in this article.

Email your university's international student office now, while the visa is still pending. Not after it fails. Not after you have already rebooked. Now. Every institution with a meaningful international intake has seen this a hundred times and most publish a late arrival window — commonly one to two weeks past the official enrolment date — during which you can still register.

Keep the email short and factual. Your student ID and CAS or offer number, the date you lodged your visa application, the current published processing time, and one clear question: what is the latest date I can arrive and still enrol for this intake? That single answer becomes the deadline you plan everything else around. Universities do not withdraw offers because a visa is slow. They withdraw offers when a student goes silent.

Should You Move Your Flight?

Not yet. First, find out what your ticket actually permits, because students routinely cancel a flexible fare and rebook at three times the price for no reason.

Call your airline or your travel agent and ask these three questions, in this order:

1. What fare class is my ticket, and does it allow a date change?
2. What is the change fee, and what is the fare difference for a departure one week and two weeks later?
3. Does the change have to be requested before the original departure time to avoid the ticket being treated as a no show?

That last question matters most. On most carriers a ticket that simply goes unused becomes far harder and more expensive to salvage than one changed the day before. Many economy fares on PIA, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad do permit a date change for a fee, and some student fares include one free change — but this varies by fare class and route, so treat it as a question to ask rather than a rule to rely on.

Do not cancel. Change, or hold.

The Scam That Targets This Exact Week

Somewhere in a WhatsApp group right now, someone is offering to "expedite" a Pakistani student's visa for a fee. It may come with a screenshot of an approval, a claim of a contact inside the visa centre, or an urgent "only two slots left today."

No such service exists. Neither UKVI, IRCC, nor the Department of Home Affairs allows any private agent to move an application up the queue. The only legitimate speed option is the official priority or super priority service, bought through the official visa application centre, at the published fee, before a decision is pending. Anyone selling anything else is selling you nothing.

The tell is almost always the same: they contacted you, they want payment by Easypaisa or bank transfer to a personal account, and they cannot give you a company registration or an office you can walk into.

Common Mistakes Pakistani Students Make

• Cancelling the flight first. Ask about a date change before you cancel anything. Cancellation is usually the most expensive option available to you.
• Paying an "expediting agent." Covered above. The money never comes back.
• Assuming a delay means a refusal. These are completely different events. A refusal arrives as a written decision with reasons. Silence is just silence.
• Submitting a second application. A duplicate does not create a second queue position. It creates confusion, and in some cases it is treated as a withdrawal of the first.
• Waiting to contact the university until the visa arrives. The late arrival window is the thing that saves your intake, and you cannot use it if nobody knows you need it.

Your Decision Timeline

Work backwards from the latest enrolment date your university gave you.

14 days before departure: confirm your status on the official tracker. Email the international office and get the late arrival date in writing. Ask your airline the three questions above and note the change fee.

7 days before departure: if there is still no decision, request a date change to a flight roughly ten days later rather than cancelling. Confirm with your accommodation provider that a delayed check in is acceptable, and tell them now rather than on the night.

3 days before departure: if the decision has still not landed and your change window is closing, move the ticket. A changed ticket costs a fee. An unused ticket usually costs the whole fare.

If the decision lands after your original flight: collect your visa or access your eVisa, book the new flight, and travel. As long as you arrive inside the university's late arrival window, you enrol in this intake, not the next one. Frequently Asked Questions About a Visa Still Processing Near Your Flight Date

Does a delayed visa mean my application has a problem?

Usually not. Applications are decided in batches and workload varies sharply by season, and late August is peak season for every September intake destination. A genuine problem arrives as a request for more documents or a written refusal, not as silence.

Can I travel while my visa is still processing?

No. You cannot board a flight to the UK, Canada, or Australia on a pending student application, and the airline will not check you in without a valid visa or approved permit. This is exactly why the late arrival conversation with your university matters more than the flight date.

Should I pay for priority processing now that my flight is close?

Only if it is still available for your application, and only through the official visa application centre. Priority services generally have to be selected at or near the point of application, so check before assuming it is an option. If it is genuinely available and affordable, it is usually money better spent than a flight change.

What if my visa arrives but my accommodation start date has passed?

Contact your accommodation provider as soon as you know you will be late. University managed halls almost always hold a room for a documented visa delay. Private landlords vary, so get any agreement in writing rather than over a phone call.

Will arriving two weeks late affect my degree?

For most programmes, no. The first fortnight is largely orientation, registration, and introductory sessions that are recorded or repeated. You will need to catch up on administrative tasks quickly, but a documented late arrival inside the university's published window does not put your enrolment or your future visa record at risk.

You Are Closer Than This Feels

Almost every student who has sat where you are sitting right now is, some weeks later, sending photographs from a campus in Manchester or Toronto or Melbourne. The waiting is genuinely horrible and nobody should pretend otherwise. But a pending visa in late August is a logistics problem, not a verdict on your future.

Check the official tracker. Email the international office today. Ask your airline before you touch the ticket. And do not give a single rupee to anyone who promises to make this go faster.
